2020 Super League: Who are the contenders to win it?

Correspondent

The 25th season of Super League is upon us. Although there is a while to go before the final takes place at Old Trafford on October 10, fans and bookmakers are already beginning to predict who will win this season.

In the last decade, only three teams have won the Super League: St Helens, Leeds and Wigan. So, as the tournament enters a new decade, could there possibly be a change on the horizon?

In recent years, Salford, Castleford and Warrington have all come close to getting their hands on the trophy, so 2020 could be the season that finally sees a different team becoming crowned champions.

Here is a look at the favourites for this year’s Super League.

Which teams are the bookies’ favourites?

The reigning champions St Helens are hoping to cling on to their title in 2020, and they certainly stand a good chance of doing so. Along with Wigan, the Saints are joint 3/1 favourites to win the title. Although Wigan missed out on this year’s showpiece event, they have some hot new acquisitions on board, so they are tipped to give St Helens a run for their money. Priced at 4/1, Challenge Cup holders Warrington also have a good chance of winning the title. Next in the running are:

  •       Hull: 9/1.
  •       Castleford: 10/1.
  •       Leeds: 10/1.
  •       Catalans: 16/1.

Who are the rank outsiders?

Last year, Salford Red Devils upset the odds by beating Wigan Warriors 28 – 4 to reach the grand final of the Super League for the very first time. Seeing as the team flirted with relegation for several seasons, they were initially one of the favourites to drop in 2019, but they somehow managed to prove everyone wrong.

After a massive turnover of players, grand finalists Salford once again rank as outsiders to win the Super League this year, with odds of 33/1. And many are predicting that the team will be the competition’s biggest sliders this year. But, as seen last season, the Red Devils should not be written off just yet.

Trailing in last-place as the most improbable contenders to win the 2020 Super League are Huddersfield, Hull Kingston Rovers and Toronto, all of which have odds of 50/1.

But, as every rugby fan knows, betting odds can change quickly. If Salford managed to turn things around last season, who knows, maybe Hull, Toronto or Huddersfield can do the same.

Out of those three teams, Hull Kingston Rovers perhaps stand the best chance of rising through the ranks. With several exciting new additions to the team, Hull looks like a very different team to the side that nearly became relegated last year.

Meanwhile, experts are currently predicting Huddersfield will become relegated this season. It will be interesting to see how winners of the 2019 RFL Championship Toronto Wolfpack fare, as they are playing in the Super League for the first time, after replacing the relegated London Broncos.

One thing is for sure: the 2020 Super League is shaping up to become a memorable season. Will you pick this year’s winners? Well, you will have to wait until October to find out.
