Former Wales rugby union international Andy Powell made his Wigan debut in Friday’s defeat to Castleford, and he was pleased to get that first game under his belt.

Powell, 31, joined the Warriors from Sale Sharks at the end of the rugby union season in May, and was a late call-up in to Shaun Wane’s squad for the game, which ended in a shock 18-4 defeat for the league leaders.

He told the club’s official website: “The result wasn’t great but to get on the pitch and wear that jersey was a big step forward for me. There is obviously a lot to work on but I am glad I have come through it unscathed.

“Training has been going well and Shaun Wane asked me how did I feel and I said I was willing to give it a go and I was ready for it, he gave me my chance and I thank Waney for that.

“I knew it was going to be tough beforehand from watching it as a kid. I am one of those guys that will give it my best shot and I will definitely get better.

“My goals are to train just as much as I can and a few more games with spells like that it will start to come.”
