Wigan getting Mitch Clark early a possibility, reveals Adrian Lam

Wigan coach Adrian Lam revealed the club are scouring the market for a prop, and getting Mitch Clark early is an option they are considering.

The Warriors are short on numbers in the middle after Gabe Hamlin was suspended for a UK Anti-Doping violation back in April and Taulima Tautai left the club earlier this week following a drink-driving conviction.

Wigan have signed prop Mitch Clark from Castleford on a three-year deal from 2020, and Lam hinted that the club are looking to bring him in earlier than expected.

Speaking after their 28-12 win over Salford on Friday, Lam said: “The club have talked about filling the position.

“We have lost Hamlin and Tautai this year and Ben Flower is out at the minute too, so we are certainly short of a middle player.

“We are now in the process of looking to see what the opportunities are out there.

“He [Clark] is obviously one of the options but we will probably know a little bit about that within the next seven days.”

Wigan moved up to fourth in the Super League table with their win over Salford, leapfrogging the Red Devils and Catalans.

However, the Warriors were dealt a blow as captain Sean O’Loughlin limped off the field in the second minute and didn’t return.

Lam commented: “Lockers felt a sharp pain through his Achilles, I think it’ll be something with a nerve.

“He knows his body so you let him decide whether he can play on or not, but losing him in the first set wasn’t ideal.

“When he went off, he holds a real presence and he’s a leader, and we could have faultered a little bit but the boys dug in for each other.”

O’Loughlin is a doubt for Friday’s home clash against Hull KR, while Dan Sarginson is expected to be fit to return to action.
