Championship round-up: Halifax snatch win, York edge Leigh, Sheffield flying high

There were a few tight games in the Championship on the weekend.

A late try from Gareth O’Brien saw Toronto Wolfpack snatch a 22-17 victory against Dewsbury Rams at the Tetley’s Stadium.

Adam Higson, Ryan Brierley and Blake Wallace also crossed for the Canadian club. Darcy Lussick and Daniel Igbinedion were sin-binned in the second half for fighting, while Chris Annakin was sent off for spitting at Bob Beswick.

Halifax came from being 10-0 down at half-time to win 18-16 against Swinton Lions at The Shay.

James Saltonstall bagged a brace for Fax, while Steve Tyrer also scored.

Sheffield Eagles ran in eight tries to ease past Batley Bulldogs 44-16 at the Olympic Legacy Park.

James Glover, Anthony Thackeray, Blake Broadbent, Joel Farrell, Oliver Davies, Ben Blackmore and Paddy Burns scored for the Eagles. Brad Knowles and Dane Manning were sin-binned in the first half for fighting, while the latter received a second yellow card in the second half for a high tackle.

Connor Robinson added a drop goal 11 minutes from time as York City Knights edged Leigh Centurions 9-8 at Bootham Crescent.

Joe Batchelor scored the only try for the Knights, while Andy Thornley went over for the Centurions.

Toulouse Olympique put in a professional performance as they ran-out 14-0 winners against Bradford Bulls at Odsal.

Tony Maurel and Stan Robin went over for the French side.

Widnes Vikings bounced back from a couple of weeks of financial torment as they ran in eight tries to thrash Featherstone Rovers 44-22 at the Halton Stadium.

Liam Hood, Anthony Gelling, Ryan Ince (2), Jack Owens (2), Brad Walker and Sam Wilde all got on the scoresheet for the Vikings.

Rochdale Hornets claimed their first points of the season as they beat Barrow Raiders 20-8 at the Crown Oil Arena.

Adam Lawton, Ben Moores and Liam Carberry scored for Rochdale.

Toronto sit at the top of the table with ten points, while Sheffield and York are just behind them with eight.
