Wilkin hopes Super League teams put on impressive display

Jon Wilkin hopes the three teams taking part in the World Club Series can put in performances that shows the Super League can compete with the NRL.

St Helens, Wigan Warriors and Leeds Rhinos come up against the Sydney Roosters, Brisbane Broncos and the North Queensland Cowboys this weekend.

With more and more British players making the move Down Under from England, such as international winger Joe Burgess, Wilkin believes that this weekend offers the chance for the English sides to show that the standard is not so different in an attempt to keep our biggest names.

Super League versus the NRL is a big thing isn’t it?” Wilkin told BBC Radio Merseyside.

“A lot of our guys are being tempted over to the NRL at the moment, so they’ve certainly got the close eye on our competition.

“We need to show our competition still has got merits and show young guys they should want to stay and play in our competition. That’s what it’s about for me, being the aspirational rugby competition and competing with the NRL so our guys want to stay in the country.”
