England stand-off Gareth Widdop has been confirmed as the man who will kick off the forthcoming Danny Jones Game at Halifax.

The game, which will take place at The Shay on Sunday 11, and will consist of a non-contact game of rugby league between a Halifax XIII and a Rest of the World XIII.

Mick Scott will coach the Halifax select 13’s, and Robbie Hunter Paul will be captaining the World side, with a host of RL celebrities and former players included alongside current players.

Widdop will kick the game off, after Danny Jones‘s widow, Lizzie Jones, has opened proceedings with a rendition of ‘Abide With Me’, the hymn she sung ahead of this year’s Challenge Cup final.

Like Jones, Widdop grew up in Halifax, and also played amateur rugby for King Cross Park.
