Westwood signs new Wire deal

Forward Ben Westwood has signed a new one-year contract with Warrington until November 2017.

The 34-year old joined the Wolves in 2002, experiencing the club’s move from Wilderspool to The Halliwell Jones Stadium just a few years later. He is the longest-serving player in the current Wire squad.

“We are delighted for Ben to commit to the club for another year,” Head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith said.

“He’s playing as good rugby in his maturing years as he ever has and he’s training better too; he’s really taken care of himself.

“Ben’s been a great servant to the club and we feel he’s got plenty left in him. He’s not ready to hand over that ‘Super’ title to young Ben Currie yet.

“He’s certainly living up to his reputation and playing really well. He’s doing a great job for us and he’s a pleasure to work with and is an important part of our team and culture here.”

Westwood has made 374 appearances for Warrington and was shortlisted for Man of Steel in 2012.

The England international has crossed for 122 tries and kicked 82 goals for Warrington.

“I am really excited,” Westwood said.

“I am glad that we’ve got it sorted out pretty quickly. I have been a part of this club for such a long time and I would like it to go on a little bit longer yet.

“Super Bennie Currie can wait another couple of years can’t he? It’s been a great journey so far. There’s still one thing I haven’t won at this club so hopefully we can get that done.

“I’m still feeling pretty good. My body is still feeling alright and I’m confident that I can still add to the team; we’ll have to wait and see.”
