As last week, Jamie Rooney was at the core of the Wildcats’ performance, ending the game with a personal total of 20 points and grabbing the try and conversion that made the game safe for Wakefield.

The Reds had opened the scoring through Simon Finnigan before Ryan Atkins and Duncan MacGillivary touched down to give the home side a 16-6 advantage.

However, Salford narrowed the gap with a try from Matt Adamson and John Wilshere’s conversion and penalty, to leave the scoreline poised at 16-14 in Wakefield’s favour before at the half-time interval.

Again the Wildcats edged themselves into the lead, Kevin Henderson and Tevita Latu the try-scorers as the home side opened up a 28-14 lead over their opponents.

But Salford forced their way back into the game, an interception leading to an 80-metre move for Gareth Haggerty to touch down, before another try – this time from Daley Williams – reduced the deficit to 28-24.

Here Rooney asserted his influence, kicking a penalty to further the lead, before a try and conversion which sealed the game in the Wildcats’ favour.
