Twitter Talk: Fans react to the Million Pound Game

Catalans Dragons sealed their Super League status for 2018 following a 26-10 victory over Leigh Centurions at the Leigh Sports Village on Saturday afternoon.

Matty Dawson put Leigh 6-0 up before Iain Thornley pulled one back for the French side. The Centurions narrowly led 6-4 at the break.

James Clare put Leigh 10-4 in front shortly after the restart but the Dragons then hit top form and scored 22 unanswered points through Lewis Tierney, Luke Walsh and Fouad Yaha to win 26-10 in the Million Pound Game.

Catalans will remain in the top-flight next season while Leigh will play in the Kingstone Press Championship following relegation.

Here’s how you reacted to Catalans avoiding the drop and Leigh being relegated:

What did you think of the game? And what do you think of the Million Pound Game concept? Let us know in the comments below.

  1. Poor game too much tension.
While this concept stays then ,stop the State Of Mine farce. Think of all tha family’s who after 80 minutes of rugby have contract torn up. Disgrace, the contract are not legal at hat they are ignored. Why do the Players Agents not speak out???

  2. Leigh lost the plot 2nd half . Can’t hand 8 points in penalties to the opposition. The million pound game concept is a cruel way to end the season.should be straight relagation when regular season ends. Sam Moa post match was superb.full respect to him.

  3. Enough is enough. There are no winners in the million pound game. RFL have set this game up as a final but the winners only reward is survival. At the end of the regular season, the bottom team in super league need to be relegated with dignity not to have their misery compounded in front of a live tv audience. To only have a play off system for promotion is a safe option but there is a winner, with rewards and the less fortunate just carry on in the championship. If the RFL want to extend the season then have a long term plan to increase the number of teams in each league. It’s simple but it should work.

  4. Listen ere my club played Bradford and now look at us 5th this year.look at hull kr went down last year and straight back up look at Salford scrapped thru last year fantastic season this year there shoukd always be promotion and relegation for me either via million pound game or realistically the team that finishes bottom after 23 rounds ie Widnes !

  5. Not a fan, it should be either, the tried and tested way of the bottom team drops or tick the boxes and jump through the hoops of the license system.
As a Widnes fan, we should have dropped, as we finished bottom, but, I do not think we would have finished bottom if, the old system was in place.
The system is flawed, not just the unpopular million pound game.
HKR after sailing through the league, surprisingly lost their last couple of games, thus, raising an eyebrow and, getting themselves an easier draw in the qualifying fixtures. Drawing their fellow championship teams first, and basically nearly gaining promotion, before their solid performance against widnes, their first super league opposition, but certainly deserved promotion, congratulations to them.
With losing their last game of the season against Halifax, HKR avoided an unwanted away trip to France to play Toulouse, the only team to beat them twice and, giving Leigh a break by giving them only one difficult trip to France, instead of two!
After securing promotion back to the super league, HKR rested players , nearly all of the team that beat widnes and generally played a youth and fringe team at home to Catalans. This under the present system, they were very entitled to do, also, this youth and fringe team played absolutely excellently and they were very unlucky to lose, however, would they have played that team if promotion was not secured? Of course not!
A full HKR team at home would of probably easily of beat a poor Catalan team at that time.
This added to the conundrum, the Catalans now nearly safe, depending on the Widnes game at home, leaving widnes with an unenviable trip to Perpignan, a place they had yet to win, also widnes would have been safe if HKR had beat Catalans.
Would Widnes or Leigh have done HKR any favours if they were in the same position!? I think not.
This is the fault in this format!
The rugby is nervous and not great, the drama is highly entertaining as is a public execution, but the pay masters at Sky Love it, yet they will not show the brilliant championship and below! Criminal!
What about the Whitehaven v York game for example, shame on you sky!
Congratulations to Catalans, and commiserations to Leigh.
Sam Moa and Derek Beaumont were fantastic ambassadors of this great game, eloquent and honest.
They offer the answer of this question!!
