Steve Southern leaves Wildcats

Former Wakefield captain Steve Southern has left the Wildcats by mutual consent.

Southern, 30, only moved to the Rapid Solicitors Stadium last year, but saw his first year at the club riddled by injuries which limited him to just 15 appearances.

Originally named as captain following his arrival from Newcastle Knights, fellow back-rower Danny Kirmond took over the role midway through the year, as the Wildcats reached the play-offs.

Head Coach Richard Agar said: “I’d like to thank Steve, especially for what he did for us early in the season and he goes with our best wishes.

“He had two years left to run but things didn’t quite work out for him for one reason or another and he’s gone back to Australia

“All parties were in complete agreement that this was the right thing to do and we wish Steve all the best as he did with us.”

Southern returned to Australia at the end of the season and both player and club have agreed to part ways.
