Steve Price confirms Greg Inglis will not play in Warrington’s Super League opener

Greg Inglis has played 39 times for Australia

Fans will have to wait to see former Australia international Greg Inglis in Super League after he was ruled out of Warrington’s opening game with Castleford at Headingley on Sunday.

The 34-year-old has not played for almost two years after announcing his retirement in April 2019 and is gradually building up his fitness ahead of his comeback.

Wolves coach Steve Price confirmed that Inglis, who has signed a 12-month contract, will not play on Sunday but is not putting a time frame on his return.

“We’ll sit down and have that discussion with Greg,” Price said at his weekly press conference. “One thing I do know is that he’s working extremely hard, putting a lot of volume into his legs.

“We have a responsibility to make sure that he’s fit and healthy and you’ve got to realise he has been out of the game for quite some time.

“He’s doing all he can to get back on the field as quick as he can.

“He’ll just miss out this week but he’s getting very close.

“He’s going to be a really good asset to our football club.”

Warrington captain Jack Hughes says the former Melbourne and South Sydney centre is settling well into his new environment.

“He’s fitted in really well,” Hughes said. “He’s a world-class athlete but he’s a down-to-earth, humble guy, who works really hard.

“He brings great value to our club, not only on the field but off it.”

Inglis’ place in last week’s friendly against Leigh was taken by 19-year-old Connor Wrench but Price is more likely to turn to the experienced Jake Mamo for the game against Castleford.
