St Helens win 2019 Super League league leaders’ shield

St Helens have won their second successive Super League league leaders’ shield following Warrington’s defeat at Catalans on Saturday night.

The runaway leaders have the shield in the bag with five games to play, sitting 12 points clear of the Wolves, who defeated them in last season’s play-off semi-final and who they face in the Challenge Cup final at Wembley later this month.

Justin Holbrook’s side beat Wakefield 26-6 on Friday night, and the result in Perpignan now makes it mathematically certain that they will finish top again.

It is the eighth time Saints have finished top of the pile, and they are likely to receive the trophy at their next home match against Castleford.

Club Captain James Roby said: “We are obviously delighted to secure a second League Leaders shield in two years.

“It’s a great reward for our consistency this season, but this is just the start. We now must focus on building on this and continue to pick up the wins ensuring we have momentum heading into the playoffs. We also of course are focused on securing the Challenge Cup in the Final at Wembley in a few weeks’ time.

“I would personally like to thank our fantastic supporters who’ve been right behind us throughout the year and we hope we can reward them with more trophies this season.”
