St Helens have confirmed that they could be without prop forward Matty Lees for up to 11 weeks.

The 23-year-old recently underwent surgery on his ankle after he left the field mid-way through the first half of their challenge cup clash against Leeds.

Head coach Kristian Woolf said: “Matty has had minor surgery [on his ankle] and has had that fixed. He will be out for a couple of months – somewhere between the 10 or 11 week mark and that is obviously a big loss for us.

“I was really happy with how Matty had started the season. I sung his praises on how hard he had worked on his body and how fit and physically prepared he was for the season and I thought he showed that over the first couple of rounds. It is unfortunate for us and for him that he is going to be out for a period of time, but what I do know about Matty is that he is extremely diligent and he will come back soon and hit the ground running again.”

The club also confirmed that Morgan Knowles has returned to training with the squad following a thumb injury.
