Sport England funding deal “relatively good” for RFL

MP Greg Mulholland says that the £10.75m Sport England funding deal is relatively good for rugby league.

The All-Party Parliamentary Rugby League Group Chairman, who is the MP for Leeds North West, is a prominent voice on the issues within the sport as part of his role.

He said: “Whilst the reduction in Sport England funding for the Rugby Football League is considerable and of course presents some challenges, in the wider context of the government’s sport strategy and in comparison to other sports, this is a relatively good settlement for rugby league.

“Rugby league is a sport that has a proud history of providing opportunities for people to get active, and though it is disappointing that its core Sport England funding has been reduced, I am sure that the RFL are working hard to create new funding streams for the game as we look towards the Rugby League World Cup in England in 2021.

“In addition to the core settlement, the Rugby Football League, clubs and other rugby league organisations across the United Kingdom are able to bid into other Sport England funding streams to promote participation in the sport, and I hope other organisations will work closely with the Rugby Football League to secure additional funding.”
