Sonny Bill Williams says NRL return is unlikely after Toronto stint

Sonny Bill Williams says a return to the NRL is unlikely, after being posed the question at his unveiling as a Toronto Wolfpack player.

Williams, 34, is a two-time NRL winner with Canterbury and Sydney, making 118 appearances in the NRL.

It is more than five years since his last game of rugby league, for the Roosters, and he will be lining up for Toronto in Super League in 2020.

He said: “I’m happy here. I’ll be 36 once this contract finishes, so I don’t think I’ll be going back to Australia any time soon.

“My wife might love Toronto, might end up living there, who knows. At the start of this year, I’d never expect to be sitting here right now, but we’re here, I’m riding that wave and it’s so exciting.”

Williams admitted he had intended to spend at least another year in union, having bowed out following New Zealand’s Rugby (union) World Cup semi-final defeat to England.
