Warrington coach Tony Smith praised youngster Ben Currie who stunned his coach on only his second Super League performance.

Warrington were missing a large number of key players including Adrian Morley, Michael Monaghan, Stefan Ratchford, Richie Myler, David Solomona, Brett Hodgson, Chris Bridge, Lee Briers and Ben Westwood.

This allowed Currie to step up again to the first team squad, and Smith was more than happy with his efforts.

Smith said: “He’s a terrific young player. I’m not sure of the official tackle count but he’s got a great work rate and he wouldn’t blow a candle out as soon as the whistle went.

“He’s a good boy and I’m pleased for him. It was a terrific experience for some of those young boys and I’m really pleased about that.”

Currie was not the only youngster making another Super League appearance with the absence of the Wolves’ big named stars, but Smith says there are plenty more players lined up to challenge for first team places.

He said: “We’re bringing some young boys through, and we also had one eye on next week against Catalan. To get through a game against a team as competitive in the competition as Salford, and able to rest up a few players, I’m pretty pleased about it really.”
