Scorpions set for milestones

South Wales Scorpions are set to hit two milestones over the Easter period and next week.

They will play their 50th ever game as a club on Easter Monday, fittingly against North Wales Crusaders, in the first Welsh derby match for 101 years, and the first ever professional North v South Wales rugby league match.

The following Saturday, April 14th, Scorpions will then travel to Halifax for the 50th Challenge Cup tie to ever feature a Welsh club.

The first Challenge Cup match to feature a Welsh club came on February 29th 1908, when Merthyr Tydfil beat Beverley 15-3. They then saw off Whitehaven 33-5 in the second round, before eventually going down 8-2 against Leigh in round three.

There were games featuring Welsh clubs for the next four seasons until 1912, but there was just one game between then and 1952 when Cardiff took Dewsbury to a replay.

Merthyr Tydfil were involved in the last Welsh rugby league derby back in December 27th 1910, when they beat Ebbw Vale 2-0 in front of a crowd of more than 4000.
