Championship club Barrow have signed centre Matty Costello on a short-term loan deal from Super League side Salford.

The 24-year-old has already enjoyed a taste of Championship action this season, having played one game on loan for Newcastle Thunder last month.

Costello initially joined Thunder on a season-long loan but was recalled by parent club Salford due after one game to their lengthy injury list at the time. He played and scored in Salford’s 30-24 defeat to Wigan the following week.

Barrow chairman Steve Neale said: “The suspension of Hakim Miloudi and Ryan Shaw still struggling with a niggling ankle injury have prompted our move into the market.”

Costello came through the ranks at St Helens. He made 26 first team appearances for the Saints between 2018-20 whilst also featuring for Championship clubs Sheffield and Leigh on loan during that time.

Costello linked up with Salford in 2021, where he has played 18 games to date, scoring seven tries.

The Billinge-born centre can also play wing and full-back. He is contention to make his Barrow debut in Sunday’s Cumbrian derby against Workington.

Bradford Bulls have loaned forward Samy Kibula to Championship rivals Dewsbury on a two-week loan deal.

The DR Congo-born forward came through the academy at Wigan, making a solitary first team appearance in 2018. He spent two seasons with Warrington between 2020-21, playing two games as well as having a loan spell with Newcastle.

Kibula could make his debut for Dewsbury in Sunday’s clash with Championship league leaders Featherstone at the Tetley’s Stadium.

Meanwhile, League 1 club Swinton Lions have signed highly-rated hooker George Roby from Super League side Huddersfield Giants.

The England Academy international was recently rewarded with a contract extension to the end of 2023. He has previously had successful loan spells with North Wales Crusaders and Whitehaven.
