Former England international Kevin Brown has labelled Wakefield as the ‘worst-ever’ side he’s ever seen in Super League.

Mark Applegarth’s Trinity currently sit at the foot of the table and remain winless in 2023, losing 14 straight Super League games as well as a Challenge Cup sixth round defeat to Leigh.

The side hold the worst attacking record so far this year, having crossed for just 87 points – an average of six points per game.

During Magic Weekend, Wakefield, with a spine of Max Jowitt, Mason Lino and Will Dagger, failed to post any points during a period where opponents Leigh found themselves down to 11 men.

They only avoided their sixth nilling of the season in the 71st minutes with a consolation try from full-back Jowitt in a 30-4 defeat at St James’ Park.

Wakefield next face Leeds this Sunday, and Brown shared his brutal assessment of the side on the latest episode of Betfred’s The Last Tackle.

Kevin Brown assesses Wakefield’s struggling season

“I think it’s the worst side I’ve seen in Super League, full stop,” the World Cup finalist said.

“In attack, when you don’t look like scoring against 11 men – I’ve never seen that.

“Even if you’re a poor side and you’ve not got your talent out there, against 11 men, if you go to the middle of the field, there’s lots of options and overlaps, even if you don’t create much.

“But Leigh were still scoring points at that stage and that’s the worry for me.

“Their defence hasn’t been bad all year. They’ve leaked a lot of points, but their attack has been dreadful.

“I think that is the 13th game out of 15 or 16 now where they’ve not scored a point in the first half.”

“Boring style of rugby.”

Wakefield had their chance to post their first points when Leigh were reduced to 11 men, with Ben Reynolds sent off for a punch on David Fifita, while Tom Nisbet was soon after sent to the sin-bin for a ‘hip-drop tackle’ on Adam Sidlow.

Winger Tom Lineham was held up during that period, before the 30-year-old dropped the ball over the line as Wakefield remained nilled at the break and Leigh returned to 12 men.

“When Tom Lineham got held up, it was a fantastic tackle by Josh Charnley,” Brown continued.

“And then he got another chance 20 seconds later and he was over the line, he dropped the ball.

“Obviously the confidence has been affected because of the lack of points they’ve got.

“The old plays with blocks, that’s what they’re doing now. It’s just the same old, predictable, boring style of rugby.”
