Powell: We have to start better

Wigan hooker Sam Powell says his side have to start their games better after a lackluster opening period against Castleford saw them notch their fourth defeat in their past five games.

Apart from their huge 60-12 victory over Wakefield, the Warriors have been defeated by Leeds, St Helens, Warrington in the Challenge Cup and now Castleford in the past month.

Wigan went behind 12-0 early against the Tigers before clawing their way back into the contest.

Powell believes the Warriors gave themselves too much to do late in the game after a poor spell after kick off.

“We had a chance at the end to win it, but we didn’t start the game very well,” he admitted.

“We spoke after it we’ve got to fix our start up, it wasn’t great.”

Wigan next host St Helens at the DW Stadium this Friday. The last time the two sides met St Helens prevailed 23-4 in a dominant derby performance.

Powell said the Warriors will be up for this encounter.

“It was a close game last time,” the 24-year old said.

“We defended well, we just didn’t attack very well. Against Cas we didn’t defend very well and we attacked OK at times.

We’ll watch the video and it’s a great game to get back in.”
