Salford hooker Gareth Owen has signed for Sheffield on a season-long loan.

Owen, 21, follows Will Hope and Jon Ford from the Red Devils to the Eagles for the 2014 season.

He said: “I’m excited to be joining the Eagles. They had a great season last year, winning the Championship for a second successive year and I hope I can help them defend the trophy again in 2014.”

Owen joined Salford back in 2010, and has made 36 appearances in Super League, scoring six tries.

Eagles coach Mark Aston said: “I’m delighted we have managed to bring in Gareth for the season.

“He has a number of first team appearances under his belt at Salford and will bring with him that Super League mentality.

“He began training with us last night (Wednesday) and wants to develop his game which I’m sure if he keeps the right attitude and determination he will do.

“We now have competition for places right across the squad. Nobody’s place is certain and everyone will have to train hard and play well to keep their place.”
