Orange joins York after Castleford exit

York have signed young back-rower Sam Orange from Castleford.

Orange, 19, is a former York Acorn junior and also played for the Knights scholarship, and has spent the past three seasons being coached by new York boss Gary Thornton in the Castleford academy.

Thornton said: “I have coached Sam for the past 3 seasons at Castleford Tigers academy, and had no hesitation in bringing him to York. With the changes to the Superleague Academy, he was looking for an opportunity, and I’m delighted to be able to offer him the chance to prove himself at Championship level.

“He has been very close to being offered first team opportunities at Castleford during his time there, and still has hopes of pushing up to Super League on the back of a successful time in the Championship.

“He has been unlucky with injuries in the past which has perhaps stalled his progress a bit at Cas. However, he got a decent 2012 season under his belt in the U20’s, and is now keen to kick on with us. He is very strong and athletic, and carries the ball really well.

“He has a fantastic attitude towards his training and the game, and I’m sure he will be a big asset to us in 2013. He’s a local lad too and is delighted to be joining his home town club.”

Orange will combine playing with his studies at York St John University.
