Newcastle have handed Connor Clayton a one-year deal following a successful trial period with the club.

Clayton was brought in at the start of pre-season a trial basis after impressing in training.

The hooker made his debut in Thunder’s 32-28 defeat to Coventry Bears on Sunday.

On signing Clayton, Newcastle coach Jason Payne said: “I’m delighted that we are able to offer Connor a contract after his pre-season trial.

“He has been the best in gym, best on the training field and has been consistent in how he’s approached training.

“I’m really excited to give him the opportunity and see how far he can take it after he took a huge risk by leaving his job moving up from Leeds.

“He has thrown himself whole heartedly in to this to give himself the best opportunity he can and a massive credit to him as I believe the risk he took has paid off.”

On joining Thunder permanently, Clayton said: “I’m absolutely over the moon!

“I’m very positive for the season and with the squad we have we should definitely be up there in the table, fighting for promotion.”
