Matty Ashton set to miss three months with ankle injury

Warrington head coach Steve Price has confirmed that utility back Matty Ashton will undergo ankle surgery next week.

The 22-year-old was making his third appearance of the season against Hull KR last weekend when he picked up the injury in the second half.

He was subsequently replaced by young Josh Thewlis in Friday’s Challenge Cup victory over Catalans, with Greg Inglis reverting to full-back in the absence of the former Swinton Lions flyer.

Further tests have confirmed that Ashton will now miss a significant chunk of the season as he begins his rehabilitation.

“Matty Ashton is going to be out for about three months, which is unfortunate,” Price said.

“He has torn the inside and outside of his ankle ligaments and is under the knife on Tuesday.”
