Leigh swoop for hometown boy

Leigh have signed hometown boy Tommy Goulden from Oldham on a one-year deal.

Goulden, 28, moves to the Centurions after spells with the Roughyeds and Rochdale Hornets, and has previously played for local amateur side Leigh Miners Rangers.

The back-rower has spent the past two years at Boundary Park, scoring 23 tries, and was captain of the side that lost 28-26 to Keighley in the Championship One Grand Final on Sunday.

“Tommy comes highly recommended.” Centurions boss Ian Millward commented. “We were looking for a person who was both strong and hard working. He’s a tough player.

“He wanted to come and play for Leigh after earlier playing amateur rugby in the town. He ticked all the right boxes. He’s a local boy, a back-rower, but I think the biggest thing with him is his enthusiasm. He wants to be involved.”

Tommy is the latest recruit to Ian Millward’s 2010 Centurions squad and will link up with other new signings Robbie Paul, Ricky Bibey, John Duffy and Tim Hartley when the team comes back into training in November.
