Leigh scoop Championship League Leaders’ Shield

Leigh lifted the Championship League Leaders’ Shield for the second successive season following a 66-10 win over Doncaster.

The Centurions lost just once in the league this season, to London Broncos, repeating the feat of 2014, when they also went on to win the Championship Grand Final.

This season there is a greater prize at stake – a place in Super League, which they can earn should they finish in the top three of the Super 8s “The Qualifiers” series, or win the Million Pound Game between the teams finishing 4th and 5th.

RFL chairman Brian Barwick said: “There has been a real edge to the action in the Kingstone Press Championship this season. It has provided highly entertaining and keenly fought contests ‎from the start.

“Congratulations to Leigh Centurions on winning the League Leaders’ Shield. Paul Rowley’s men have proved themselves to be a formidable team, both in the League and the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup, and they will now go forward into the next stage of their campaign confident they can continue that run of form.

“Congratulations also to Bradford Bulls, Sheffield Eagles and Halifax who will join Leigh in The Qualifiers along with their First Utility Super League rivals.

“It promises to be a fantastic set of matches.”

The fixtures for the Super 8s “The Qualifiers” and also the Super League Super 8s and the Championship Shield Super 8s will be announced on Wednesday.
