Leigh deny Williams reports

Leigh have denied reports from Australia that new signing Joe Williams knows nothing about his move to England.

An Australian newspaper reported that Williams had signed for country rugby league side Lavington Panthers and was set to make his debut for them this weekend.

But Leigh have reiterated their stance in having signed a contract with the half back.

Head Coach Neil Kelly said, “The paper reports there has been a denial that he’s signed, but we’ve got his name on a contract. We can only negotiate and sign players from the other side of the world and trust they are being honest with us. I believe we’ve got a contract with Joe Williams. I’m sure he’ll honour it.

“We are seeking clarification but are proceeding with the signing. We’ve been told Joe Williams was available, we signed him. If he’s truthful and honest, he’ll honour it. If not, then we’ve been led up the garden path.”

Williams, who has played in the NRL with South Sydney Rabbitohs, was reported as saying: “This is actually the first I’ve heard of it.

“Apparently there is significant interest (from Leigh) but I definitely haven’t signed anything.”

Williams is adamant a “third party” has negotiated with Leigh on his behalf, but without his knowledge.

“I know nothing about it. All I know is that I’ll be playing for Lavington this week.”
