League 1 round-up: Hitchcox debut, Whitehaven run riot, Mazive shines for York

There were a number of heavy scorelines in round seven of the Betfred Championship.

Bradford’s on loan winger Jy Hitchcox scored two tries on his debut to help the Bulls ease past Coventry Bears 52-6 at Odsal on Sunday. George Flanagan also bagged a brace for Bradford.

Workington Town lost 27-20 to Hunslet at the South Leeds Stadium, despite having led 20-8 midway through the second half. Hunslet’s on loan forward Jack Blagbrough got on the scoresheet.

Lee Kershaw scored two tries on his Oldham debut to help them get their first win at home this year with a 32-18 victory over Keighley Cougars. Kershaw is on loan from Wakefield Trinity along with Luke Hooley, who was superb.

Whitehaven ran in 17 tries to demolish West Wales Raiders 84-6 at the Recreation Ground on Sunday. Papua New Guinean Jessie Joe Parker marked his 150th appearance for Haven with his 100th try for the club in their record home win.

Two tries from ex-Super League star Richard Owen helped Doncaster keep Hemel Stags scoreless with a 60-0 victory at the Keepmoat Stadium.

A hat-trick from England Academy ace Judah Mazive led York City Knights to an enthralling 66-6 win over London Skolars at Bootham Crescent. Kieren Moss and Aaron Smith also scored two tries each.

Newcastle Thunder returned to winning ways by beating North Wales Crusaders 30-10 at Queensway Stadium.

Doncaster, Bradford and York are all joint at the top of the table with five wins from six games, while Whitehaven and Hunslet are fifth and sixth. Hemel and West Wales are bottom with zero points.
