Hunslet Hawks scrum-half Luke Helliwell has been named Premier Sports Player of the Week following his performance on Sunday. Helliwell excelled in his first game as captain, helping Hunslet to a 42-22 win over Doncaster.

Coach Barry Eaton described it as Helliwell’s best display for the club as the Hawks moved into the Kingstone Press Championship top eight.

Eaton said: “We put some pressure on Luke’s shoulders, making him captain after David March missed out through injury, and he responded really well.

“He thrived on that extra responsibility and made sure we stuck to our game-plan, even when we were 16-0 down inside the first quarter.

“Luke showed real composure, kicked well and probably topped the tackle count because Doncaster were sending a lot his way. It was his best ever game in a Hunslet shirt.”

Each week every coach in the Kingstone Press Championship – and Championship One once it begins – is consulted to help select both a Premier Sports Team of the Week and Player of the Week.

A top five will then be formed for the individual award, with the points awarded counting towards the Championships’ Player of the Year accolade.
