Oldham chairman Chris Hamilton has praised his coach Tony Benson and his players for their performance on Friday.

Oldham lost 76-0 to St Helens in the fifth round of the Challenge Cup, and Hamilton says he the club’s spirit showed throughout the tie.

He said: “I would also like to pay tribute to Tony and the boys for doing us proud. Every player gave everything he had. We couldn’t have asked for more from anybody. All of them showed tremendous spirit and commitment when thrown against one of the best club teams in world rugby league.”

“It was just a pity we lost Miles Greenwood with an ankle injury, but hopefully it will turn out to be an injury that was perhaps not as serious as first feared.”

Hamilton also paid credit to the fans who had to sit through 76 consecutive points going against their side without having anything to cheer for.

He said: “Our fans were magnificent, not only in how they turned up in numbers but in how much vocal support they provided for the boys from start to finish.”
