Championship Shield round-up: Newman stars for Featherstone, local lads inspire Leigh, Batley perform comeback

Round four of the Championship Shield provided us with some cracking games.

Dewsbury Rams ran-out comfortable 32-12 winners against Barrow Raiders at The Tetley’s Stadium on Sunday. Rob Worrincy, Brad Delaney, Lucas Walshaw, Aaron Brown and Adam Ryder scored for the Rams. Dewsbury’s Jode Sheriffe was sin-binned for a high tackle in the second half, while Barrow duo Ryan Duffy and Martin Aspinwall were shown yellow cards for dissent and a high tackle.

Leigh Centurions ran in nine tries to ease past Swinton Lions 54-10 at the Leigh Sports Village on Sunday. Local lads Sam Peet and Brad Whelan made their debuts for Leigh and both scored. Swinton half-back Rob Fairclough was sin-binned in the second half for interference.

The 16-men of Featherstone Rovers beat Sheffield Eagles 32-12 at the Olympic Legacy Park on Friday night. Leeds Rhinos youngster Harry Newman scored twice for Rovers, while Blake Broadbent also bagged a brace for the Eagles. Newman was sent to the sin bin in the second half for throwing the ball away.

Batley Bulldogs scored three tries in the final ten minutes to win 26-12 against Rochdale Hornets at the Fox’s Biscuits Stadium. Alex Rowe, Johnny Campbell, Adam Gledhill, Wayne Reittie and Sam Smeaton all scored for the Bulldogs, while Deon Cross got two for the Hornets. Batley forward Dane Manning was shown a yellow card in the second half for a shoulder charge.
