South Wales Scorpions coach Phil Carleton was pleased to put his squad through its paces over the weekend, with the players gathering for a session on Sunday.

The players were put through a series of tests, including the beep test, to establish at just what levels their fitness and preparedness is at ahead of the 2016 campaign.

The players were also given a full health screening, carried out by Advance Complete Sport Services.

“It’s been a very productive and positive day,” said Carleton.

“All the lads have worked really hard. I think it’s opened a few eyes as to what we expect of the players this year in terms of their physical fitness.

“A few have found areas where they lack and must improve, but that’s what testing is all about.

“Greg Foley [Scorpions strength and conditioning coach] and Natalie Melfa [from Advance Complete Sport Services] have been exceptional in their planning and it now means each play will have an individual training programme.

“It’s a short turnaround though as the boys are back in tomorrow (Monday) evening for another tough session at our new home Virginia Park in Caerphilly.

“My thanks must go to Peak Physique and Cardiff and Pentwyn Leisure Centre for allowing us to use their exceptional facilities.”
