Broughton follows in father’s footsteps

Hunslet have signed former Leeds and Warrington youngster Brooke Broughton from York.

Broughton, 22, came through the Rhinos junior set up before John Bastion took him to Warrington, and was released when Super League disbanded their Under 20s competition.

Hawks director of rugby Darren Williams said: “Brooke was recommended to the club by John Bastion and we took note of his performance playing for York against us in August, he’s very quick for such a big unit with a good offload in his game, he can play at the front or back of the scrum and his size will be a big asset as we look to build a strong pack for 2014.

“Brooke had a couple of offers including staying at the Knights but he lives in Middleton and it’s always that bit extra special when you have local lads playing in the team, he is the son of former Hawks star from the 1980’s Stan Warriner.”

Meanwhile, centre or back-rower Aston Wilson has penned a contract extension for 2014 following a season disrupted by thumb and groin injuries.

Aston’s father Warren also played for Hunslet back in the 1980s.
