Bowman set to tackle marathon challenge

Leeds Rhinos Foundation’s Director of Rugby, Bob Bowman QPM, will begin his epic charity challenge of 15 marathons in 15 days on Friday 12th May.

For the first ten days Bowman, who served for 28 years with West Yorkshire Police and received the highly prestigious Queen’s Police Medal in her 2014 Birthday Honours list, will join 15 runners taking on Brathay Trust’s 10 in 10 Challenge around Lake Windermere.

Each of the runners will be able to get a sports massage following the completion of the individual marathons and in preparation for this it has been recommended that each runner has their legs waxed to make the deep tissue massage more effective.

To show he was a good sport, Bowman agreed to let Rhinos players Joel Moon, Rob Burrow and Mitch Garbutt help out with the waxing.

“We are full of admiration for the challenge Bob is taking on,” said Moon. “To test your body in a marathon for 15 consecutive days is unbelievable and we wish him the best of luck for this.

“At the club we work closely with Leeds Rhinos Foundation, so we see directly the great work they do across the city with children and adults and we hope our fans get behind his fundraising challenge.”

Following the first 10 marathons, Bowman will put his stamina to the test for an additional five days to make his way back to Headingley Carnegie ahead of the Rhinos’ fixture against Warrington on 26th May.

“There are a few nerves heading into the challenge, but the support I’ve received from fans, players, MPs and our vice presidents has been incredible and I’m determined to repay the faith they have shown in me and complete the 15 marathons and to be able to finish at Headingley Carnegie is a big motivation for me,” said Bowman.

“I’m aiming to raise £25,000 for Leeds Rhinos Foundation and this money will help us to continue to deliver life changing projects with some of the most vulnerable people in our city.”
