Aston begins rebuilding at Sheffield

Sheffield Eagles coach Mark Aston believes new signing Kyle Briggs adds some much needed versatility to his squad.

Briggs joined Sheffield from Featherstone Rovers this week, signing a two-and-a-half year deal.

The 26-year-old should be available for the Eagles’ home game with North Wales Crusaders this weekend.

“I’m absolutely delighted to have signed Kyle. He’s a quality player, a quality individual who brings a wealth of experience, class and a great attitude to the team,” said Aston.

“We have given Kyle a two-and-a-half year contract which we feel shows what Kyle can give Sheffield Eagles.

Loose-forward would be a good position for Kyle but he can also play half-back,” he said. “The nice thing is that he gives us a bit of utility – whether he’s a 13 or a six we’ll see, but he’ll do a fantastic job for Sheffield Eagles.

“We’re rebuilding. We lost four senior players this year, quality players and you can’t replace them.

“It’s great that we are in a position to get a senior player like Kyle.”

Briggs has played in Super League with Bradford and London. He is looking forward to reigniting his career in the Steel City.

“This is new and exciting challenge for me,” said Briggs.

“I’ve started to enjoy my rugby again and want to get back to playing the quality which attracted the Super League interest.

“I’m looking forward to working with Mark Aston and his back room staff, Dave Larder and Keith Senior.

“I’ve heard alot of good things about Sheffield.  There’s a strong squad of players who I am looking forward to joining, add in those who Mark is looking to add this year and the Eagles will be flying high again in no time.”
