Kay relishing encounter with old friends at Wakefield

Leigh player Liam Kay is enjoying the prospect of seeing some familiar faces when his team play Wakefield in the Challenge Cup this weekend.

The sixth round tie takes place at Belle Vue on Sunday, and Kay, who is Leigh’s top try-scorer this season wants to do well against a club he left ahead of the 2014 season.

“I’ve been looking forward to going back there since the new structure was unveiled,” said Kay.

“Once we get towards the end of the regular season, we always identified Wakefield as a potential opposition. I’ve got a lot of friends there as well. I can’t wait to head back there.”

The 23-year-old made five appearances for the Wildcats in his time at the club.

Kay has notched 22 tries in 14 games so far this season, something he puts down to the good work of the players around him.

“A lot of the tries I’ve scored have been walk-ins, I don’t have to do too much,” he said.

“I put it down to players like my centre Tom Armstrong, and also with Greg McNally playing out the back, it makes my job very easy.

“We’re concentrating on winning the game, not on our record or their form.

“Obviously with 24 games won in a row, we’re full of confidence. Hopefully we can go to Wakefield and get the job done.”
