Wane wants to put Hull in a bad place

Wigan coach Shaun Wane believes that his team can inflict some real damage on Hull FC, if they show the right attitude.

Indeed, the Warriors chief thinks that if his team play to their potential, they are “guaranteed” two points against a Hull side who lost to Salford last week.

Wigan beat Hull 44-16 at the KC Stadium in May, and Wane is anticipating a similar result on Friday at the DW Stadium, if his team take the right approach.

“We’ll go with the attitude that if we can put them in a bad place, we can have that same result again,” he said.

“So we can have a lot of confidence, especially from the last two weeks as well, because we weren’t too far off the week before against St Helens.

“We’re in a good place, we’ve got some important players ready to come back. Our form’s quite good, and we’ll go into this game on Friday confident that we can put some sets together, where we get to the end of our sets and kick on on our terms.

“If we put teams under pressure defensively, we normally come out on top.

“We just need to make sure we’re in control of our performance, and make sure that our attitude is good against a possibly very talented Hull team.

“The attitude of the players has been great, while we’ve not been consistent in our performance. I’m still very happy our attitude.

“If that’s good on Friday, then we’re pretty much guaranteed two points.”

Wane has plenty of respect for the FC players, however, particularly creative back rower Joe Westerman.

“I’m still of the opinion that they have some really good players in their team,” he said.

“They’ve got some absolute quality in their team, and Joe Westerman is one of the main ones.

“You watch the Salford game and they threw a lot at Salford. Salford were lucky to win that game. Hull weren’t far off getting a win over there.

“But I do think that we need to be at our best. It’s a different challenge to the Catalan game.

“If we attack with a bit more consistency, we’ll score points against Hull.”

Wane also acknowledges that Hull are dangerous, which is why he wants his team to focus on getting the defence right, before going into attack mode.

“They still scored 22 against Salford,” he added.

“They can score points, they’ve got really good edges on them, and they’ve got some big front rowers who make them easy metres.

“We need to do the tough stuff first, and that’s to defend in a tough manner, making sure that we control the ruck.

“If we can do that, we’ve go the backs to score points.”
