Whitehaven have stood down forward Glenn Riley due to a court case for a number of driving offences.

The Championship club released a statement last night confirming the news.

Riley has pleaded guilty to multiple offences. Those include driving with alcohol level above the limit, using a vehicle on a road or public place without insurance, and taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent.

The offences took place on Preston Street in Whitehaven, on Monday, February 21.

Riley, 30, appeared in court this week.

Whitehaven release statement

The club said in a statement: “Today Whitehaven RLFC have stood down Glenn Riley while he awaits the courts conclusion of a number of driving offences.

“As a club, Whitehaven will always try and do what is right for the player and the club. We believe that this measure is the correct one at this time.”

Riley made his professional debut for Warrington in 2012. He would represent Swinton Lions on loan while with the Super League club, before joining London Broncos for the 2015 season.

The forward moved to Whitehaven the following year, before joining Cumbrian neighbours Barrow.

He returned to his hometown club ahead of the 2020 campaign following their promotion to the Championship.

Whitehaven have registered two wins in their opening five games in the 2022 Championship campaign.

They opened their account with a 50-4 defeat away to Leigh, but have gone on to claim wins over London Broncos and Dewsbury.
