Midlands Hurricanes have confirmed that half-back Dan Coates will miss the rest of the 2023 League 1 campaign after suffering an ACL rupture.

The playmaker was one of 18 players to depart Newcastle Thunder at the end of 2022, returning to the League 1 side for 2023.

Coates suffered the injury in the 38-28 defeat at home to Workington Town earlier in March.

He holds the record for most points in a season for the club.

The 23-year-old has made three appearances in League 1 in 2023, as well as the 19-12 Challenge Cup victory over Orrell St James, kicking the drop-goal.

He is set to undergo surgery and will be forced to watch the rest of the campaign.

Meanwhile, the club has confirmed an additional injury to Brad Clavering following their 32-24 defeat to Rochdale.

Dan Coates injury blow confirmed

Midlands Hurricanes shared in a statement: “Sadly half-back Dan Coates will sit out the rest of the season after suffering an ACL rupture in the game against Workington and will undergo surgery to repair it later this month.

“Everyone at the Hurricanes are devastated for Dan and we all wish him well in his recovery/rehabilitation

“Brad Clavering also suffered an MCL Grade 2 injury against Rochdale and is currently waiting to see a specialist to see if an operation is required on the injury.

“‘Clav’ has been outstanding so far this year and we hope that to see him back in a ‘Canes shirt at some point during the 2023 season.”
