St Helens recruit Joey Lussick has praised team-mate and captain James Roby as the two look to lead the side to another successful season in 2022.

The former Salford hooker returns to Super League with St Helens, having featured for Parramatta Eels in 2021.

The 25-year-old made 59 appearances for the Red Devils after making the switch in 2018 from Manly Sea Eagles. He scored 18 tries.

Lussick now returns after a stint back in the NRL and has been relishing the chance to train with the St Helens skipper ahead of the 2022 campaign.

Joey Lussick praises team-mate James Roby

“He’s done it all in the game,” Lussick said on Roby.

“He’s the man who leads by his actions. I’m just really thankful to be able to share the training field with him.

“You could say he’s a bit of freak, just being able to continually do what he does at that level. There’s very few people in sport that can do what he can do.

“He’s very professional. He works hard and obviously the captain of the club too. There are little things that I’ve definitely seen that you know he holds himself in high regard to.

“He’s a real fit, hard working trainer. That’s what pays off in the games. He works his backside off in training. He could run all day every day and that’s exactly what he does in a game.”

Joey Lussick on working under Kristian Woolf

Lussick returns to Super League under St Helens head coach Kristian Woolf.

The hooker is one of six new faces at the club in 2022, including Curtis Sironen, Will Hopoate and Konrad Hurrell.

“I’ve really enjoyed working with Wolfie,” said Lussick

“We’ve had plenty of chats obviously from when I’ve signed before getting over here. He’s been asking me what I expect from him and also what he expects from me.

“He’s just really honest and hard working. And that’s sort of what I try and base my game off; working hard and being honest.

“I said to him just tell me black and white. If I’m up to scratch or if something is not up to standards, you just just tell me front.

“He’s been really good. We’ve had a couple of chats over here about what he’s expecting and the sort of the plan going forward.

“I really enjoyed my time so far.”

St Helens kick off the 2022 Super League campaign on Thursday, 10 February in a repeat of the 2021 Grand Final as they host Catalans.
