Ireland legend Tyrone McCarthy will depart Warrington to take up a new opportunity with NRL club South Sydney Rabbitohs.

The 35-year-old will take up a role in youth development as Pathways Coaching Director for the Rabbitohs.

Following his retirement from the game in 2021, McCarthy joined Warrington’s youth development team as scholarship head coach and assistant for the club’s academy and reserve sides.

A club statement from Warrington read: “He also made a big impact on our community development pathway programme in conjunction with our community coaches.

“The new role down under will see him continue his great work in youth development as Pathways Coaching Director for the Rabbitohs.

“We wish to thank Tyke for all he’s done for the Wire over the years and wish him well for his next chapter in Australia.”

More on Tyrone McCarthy career

McCarthy was born and raised in Warrington, England, and is of Irish heritage.

The forward made his debut for his hometown club Warrington in 2009 – the same year he made his international debut for Ireland.

McCarthy made more than 40 appearances for Warrington over four seasons with the club, playing in their Challenge Cup final triumphs in 2009 and 2012.

Whilst at the Wolves, McCarthy also enjoyed loan spells with Leigh, Wakefield and Swinton.

In 2014, McCarthy took the opportunity to play in Australia with Northern Pride, helping the club win the Queensland Cup competition.

The Irish representative then made the move back to England, where he spent the 2015 campaign with Hull KR, helping the Robins reach the Challenge Cup final at Wembley.

McCarthy earned a contract in the NRL with St George Illawarra Dragons for the 2016 and 2017 seasons, making two NRL appearances whilst featuring largely for the Illawarra Cutters in the New South Wales Cup.

McCarthy then spent four seasons with Salford in Super League between 2017-20, playing in their Super League Grand Final (2019) and Challenge Cup final (2020) defeats.

The final season of his career came in 2021, where he made 12 appearances for Leigh as they suffered relegation from Super League. He hung up his boots after that season and went into coaching with Warrington.
