Dual-code New Zealand international Roger Tuivasa-Sheck will return to rugby league in 2024 after signing a three-year deal with New Zealand Warriors in the NRL.

The 29-year-old left rugby league to take up an opportunity in rugby union with the All Blacks late in the 2021 season.

However, the Warriors have today announced his return to the 13-aside code for a second spell with his hometown club.

Warriors chief executive Cameron George said: “It’s hugely exciting knowing Roger is coming back to us, back to his home at Mount Smart Stadium.

“When he went to rugby union he did so knowing he was always welcome back here if he wished to return to rugby league. We couldn’t be more delighted it’s happening.

“He’s popular with the players and a real fan favourite. It’s going to be so good seeing him back in our jersey.”

The Samoa-born full-back scored 58 tries in 195 appearances in the NRL between 2012-21 for Sydney Roosters and the Warriors.

Tuivasa-Sheck has won 20 caps for the Kiwis on the international stage, playing in the 2013 and 2017 Rugby League World Cups.

Warriors coach Andrew Webster said: “Roger came to the club in my second season as an assistant coach in 2016 and he had a huge impact on the squad.

“That first year was cut short by his ACL injury but it was brilliant working with him. I’m super excited knowing he’s coming back to the club.”

Andrew McFadden, the Warriors’ general manager of recruitment, pathways and development, added: “Roger is such a high-quality person and leader who will add another layer to our squad with his enthusiasm, experience, skill and professionalism.

“He’ll be a tremendous mentor for our younger players while he’ll also bring in a fresh perspective after spending time in rugby union.”
