Rochdale Hornets have announced forward Jimmy Connaughton has signed a new deal for the 2022 season.

The 23-year-old made the step up to part-time rugby from Rochdale Mayfield ahead of the 2020 season. However, he would not make an appearance as a result of the season being voided.

He would make his debut in 2021 off the bench against Hunslet and make seven appearances.

On his new deal, Connaughton told the club website:“I think the goal for 2022 is to get promotion. We’ve had a year together as a team now and we are going to be tough to play against next season.

“I’m looking forward to being back with the lads and playing for Matt again. My personal aim is to cement my position in the team.”

Head Coach Matt Calland added: “I am looking for a big season from Jimmy.

“His work ethic is fantastic. He has a few rough edges in his game we need to iron out, but I believe we can do this together and he will have a good pre-season with us.

“He is another young, local Rochdale Mayfield product and he needs to kick on this season and be a regular in the team.”

A promotion push for Rochdale?

Connaughton is the 14th player to sign for Rochdale in 2022. He signs alongside the likes of Rangi Chase, and Gregg McNally, who played in the Championship playoffs with Whitehaven earlier this year.

The Hornets finished just outside the playoffs in 2021, and will be aiming to jump that extra place next year. They finished seventh, two wins behind Hunslet in the final playoff spot.
