Cockayne was born in Pontefract, West Yorkshire and played his early rugby league at local amateur side Normanton Knights. He had a short spell with Hunslet Hawks, making two appearances, before signing for Doncaster Rovers in 2006 on a trial basis. He made impressive performances for Doncaster, scoring 17 tries in 22 appearances for the club and was quickly snapped up by Hull Kingston Rovers. In his first season, Cockayne became a first team regular and the side were promoted to Super League at the end of the 2006 season, with Cockayne being second top try scorer in the squad. KR’s Super League debut saw Cockayne score the winning try in the dying minutes of the game against Wakefield Trinity Wildcats. He went on to make 21 league appearances scoring three tries and went on to improve that record in 2008, scoring 10 tries over the season.  He went on to make another 57 appearances for the Humberside club between the 2009 and 2011 seasons. Cockayne was released by Hull KR during the 2011 season due to disciplinary matters and on July 20th it was announced that he had signed for Championship outfit Featherstone Rovers for the remainder of the season. He made a strong start for Rovers in his first game away at Batley Bulldogs which saw Featherstone win 24-18. His first try came on his home debut for the club the following week against Sheffield Eagles. In the remaining games of the season, he went on to score 9 tries for Fetherstone including scoring against Sheffield again in 40-4 Grand Final win over the Eagles in October. Cockayne won both the League Leaders’ Shield and the Championship Grand Final with Featherstone. Just 8 days after the Championship Grand Final, on October 10th 2011 it was announced that Cockayne would return to Super League after signing up with Wakefield Trinity Wildcats on a one year deal from the 2012 season.
