Smith was born in Queensland, Australia and started his professional career at the age of 20 when he signed with Paramatta Eels. He made his debut in the side’s 28-12 away win at Wests Tigers in round one of the 2005 NRL season. The following round saw Smith score two tries but the Eels lost the game 49-26 away at South Sydney Rabbitohs. He started all but two games over the rest of the season for the Eels and scored a further four tries. He also featured in both the Qualifying Semi Final and the Preliminary Semi of the playoffs that year.

Smith was awarded the “Rookie of the Year” award in the 2005 Daily M Awards for the most try assists in the whole 2005 NRL competition.

He went on to make 45 appearances for Paramatta between 2006 and 2008. In 2007, Smith was suspended by the Eels after allegations were made about his drinking habits. He remained on contract with the club but was checked into a rehabilitation facility. In January 2009 the Eels lifted Smith’s suspension and allowed him to return to the squad under a number of sanctions. After just three appearances for the Eels early in 2008, Smith advised his club and team-mates that he was suffering from bipolar disorder. He then gave a statement to the media saying he had been given an indefinite leave from football, saying he would return home for some time off.

In June 2008 it was announced that Smith would return to rugby league and had signed a deal with Super League side Wigan Warriors for the remainder of 2008 and for the 2009 season. He made his Warriors debut in round 16 in a 34-4 defeat against Huddersfield. He then went on to make eight appearances for the club, including three playoff games, and scored a try in Wigan’s 32-22 win over Wakefield Wildcats.

Smith played 12 appearances for Wigan in 2009 and scored in a home win over Salford City Reds. He suffered a shoulder injury in June which ended his season, and career, at Wigan Warriors.

Reports surfaced in 2009 that Smith was eager to return to the NRL and started training with Brisbane Broncos following the end of the Super League season. He signed with Cronulla Sharks for the 2010 season and made his debut in an 11-0 win over former club Paramatta Eels in which he scored a conversion and a drop goal. Smith made a further 17 appearances for Sharks, scoring five tries and three conversions over the course of the season. He did not play for the Sharks first team during the 2011 series but appeared in the New South Wales cup

In November 2011 in was announced that Smith would return to Super League and had signed a one year deal with Wakefield.
