Martin Aspinwall signed for Huddersfield Giants in 2006, after five years with hometown club Wigan Warriors. Aspinwall has been regularly knocking on the door for the national squad and was called up to Tony Smith’s training squad for the 2008 World Cup. Having featured 99 times in the league for the JJB side, including their unsuccessful Grand Final 2003 clash against Bradford Bulls, he was released after the 2005 season. In his first year with the Giants, the winger played in their Challenge Cup final loss to St Helens. This season culminated in him being the West Yorkshire outfit’s top try scorer with 15 and gaining a call up for Great Britain’s Tri-Nations tour of Australia and New Zealand. 2007 didn’t go to plan for Aspinwall, though, as his season was cut short by a serious knee injury suffered against Warrington Wolves. However, he recovered well ahead of the 12 months first predicted and appeared in the final 15 games of the season.
