Bird is a highly rated loose forward or stand off, and has played at a representative level in Australia, representing Country Origin, New South Wales and Australia. He made his NRL debut aged 18 for Cronulla Sharks and made over 100 appearances for the club before being released after being charged with maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm on his girlfriend. Bird then agreed a move to Super League side Bradford, but this fell through when the British government failed to issue him with a work permit due to the charges. However, French side Catalans then came in to sign him until the end of the season, with visa regulations not as stringent in France. Shortly after his arrival in the South of France, Bird was made captain of the Dragons.
