Super League chief executive Nigel Wood has hailed the city of Newcastle, along with everyone who contributed in any way, after a Magic Weekend which saw a record attendance.

A total of 67,788 fans packed into St James’ Park for the event over both days, a record.

Saturday’s attendance of 40,871 was also a record for one day of the weekend.

“Magic Weekend 2015 has been a terrific success and I would like to thank everyone involved for the part they played in a weekend that will live long in the memory,” Nigel Wood.

“All the competing clubs deserve praise for the way in which they have continued to embrace a concept which is unique in British sport: not all of them came away from Newcastle with the result they wanted but their contribution to the success of Magic Weekend has been outstanding.

“Thanks also go to all the Rugby League fans who helped create the carnival atmosphere that makes Magic Weekend so special: their passion and enthusiasm for the sport is both invigorating and infectious.

“I would also like to add my personal thanks to people of Newcastle and the North East region who purchased tickets for Magic Weekend in their thousands and will have been spellbound by the event.

“Credit should also go to all the partners, sponsors and agencies whose hard work and commitment ensured that Rugby League fans were given such a warm welcome at St James’ Park and in and around the city of Newcastle.”
