Wigan’s Jai Field facing up to six weeks out with hamstring injury

Wigan coach Adrian Lam says new signing Jai Field could be out for up to six weeks after tearing a hamstring on his debut.

Field, 23, started on the wing in a makeshift Wigan line-up to cover for the absence of regular wingers Dom Manfredi and Liam Marshall, missing centre Oliver Gildart and late arrivals Bevan French and Jackson Hastings.

He pulled up on an interception attempt after a Blake Wallace pass had gone to ground, and was helped off the pitch after remaining down for a few minutes.

Lam said: “It’s up to six weeks plus depending on the severity which we’ll find out as soon as we can.

“I asked him if he would play out of position for us and he accepted that to get his debut. It’s a shame we didn’t get to see the best of him.

“It’s sad for him but we’ll rally around him and make sure he gets through that.”

The returning John Bateman had to move to centre after Field left the pitch, while fellow back-rower Willie Isa was already standing in on the other side at centre.

Lam added: “That’s something we’ll deal with tomorrow. We’ve got a few injuries but we’ll be okay.”
