Wigan close in on Thomas

Wigan are set to make a shock move to sign veteran Welsh centre Gareth Thomas for the 2012 season on a one-year deal.

The 37-year-old is without a contract after current club Crusaders withdrew their Super League licence application earlier in the season and the Warriors are expected to complete the signing shortly.

Thomas joined the Welsh outfit at the start of the 2010 season after making the switch from rugby union and has been one of the success stories of a Crusaders side that has struggled both on and off the field.

The Welshman, the second oldest player in Super League after Catalan’s Steve Menzies, is expected to take up the center berth with the Challenge Cup holders to allow Joel Tomkins to take up his more natural position as a second rower.
